Iceland is a unique island perched upon the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the tectonic plate boundary that separates the Eurasian and North American continents. Located midway between North America and the continental mainland of Europe, Iceland is a land distinguished by extreme geological contrasts. Widely known as the land of “Fire and Ice'', it is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe as well as some of the most active volcanoes. Iceland also has a unique contrast of light and darkness, with long summer days that have nearly 24 hours of sunlight, and short winter days with just a few hours of daylight.
The capital city of Reykjavík is the northernmost capital in the world, and it is among the cleanest, greenest and safest cities of the world, and is home to almost two-thirds of the Icelandic population. The word Reykjavík translates literally as “smoky bay”, a name that derives from the steam that used to rise from the hot springs and geothermal vents.
Iceland is an incredible destination, one that absolutely needs to be visited at least once in a lifetime. There is an incredible mix of natural wonders, with active volcanoes, gushing waterfalls, sprouting geysers, natural hot springs, immense glaciers, endless green meadows and some of the most incredible views of the Northern Lights. This is a landscape like no other, where Neil Armstrong and 30 other astronauts were sent to do their training prior to the Apollo mission to the moon!
